Job Title:  HSE Manager

The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager is responsible for leading the site's health, safety, environmental, and laboratory quality programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices. This hybrid role partners with Operations and leadership to promote a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, continuous improvement, and product quality while supporting laboratory testing and quality assurance activities.

This position is based in Batavia, Illinois, with occasional travel to support audits, investigations, and other regional HSE initiatives.

 

Responsibilities:

Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Develop, implement, and maintain health, safety, and environmental programs that support regulatory compliance and company objectives.
  • Promote a culture of safety by partnering with leadership and employees to identify hazards, reduce risk, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and company health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct facility audits, inspections, risk assessments, and compliance reviews while implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analyses, emergency response planning, and follow-up activities.
  • Develop and deliver safety, environmental, and regulatory training programs for employees, supervisors, and contractors.
  • Oversee environmental compliance programs, including waste management, air quality, stormwater, permitting, sustainability initiatives, and environmental reporting.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Corporate HSE teams to improve safety performance and maintain compliance with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit required HSE documentation, regulatory reports, audit records, and compliance documentation.
  • Support corporate HSE initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Laboratory & Quality

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing on raw materials, intermediates, and finished products to verify product quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and testing equipment.
  • Utilize computerized color management software and laboratory equipment to evaluate color tolerances and recommend formulation adjustments for off-spec batches.
  • Monitor in-process manufacturing quality checkpoints to ensure products meet established specifications before packaging and shipment.
  • Accurately document laboratory testing results, batch approvals, and non-conformance reports within the Quality Management System (QMS) or ERP system.
  • Support compliance with ISO 9001 standards through accurate documentation, audit preparation, and adherence to quality management procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, chemical hygiene, standard operating procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Partner with Operations and Quality teams to investigate product quality concerns, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other laboratory and quality-related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, up to 90% of the workday.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks, including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
